  1. 1) Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

I am comfortable discussing and teaching Reading because Reading has many benefits and I learn a lot when I read and I am a confident reader. Some people have a difficult time reading and read at a low level or they can't read at all. For my students I would be more than happy to help them learn how to become a better reader. It's important to read and to know and understand the words your reading. Through reading you expose yourself to new things, new information and new ways to solve a problem. Exploration begins from reading and understanding. Reading helps you form a better you through reading you begin to understand the world more. I also like how students can use their imaginations while they read. Children learn best when they use their imagination this helps students develop creative writing skills. Students can participate in different types of reading, including independent reading, shared reading, and guided reading. I believe that reading is very important! Especially since it's a part of our everyday lives.

    2) Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student?

    Teacher Roles:

    Manager
    *Sets expectations and responsibilities
    *Monitors students progress
    *Keeps records
*Arranges the classroom to facilitate learning
*Provides technology hardware and software to support language arts activities

I believe this role is important because the teacher sets expectations and responsibilities which helps the student be independent. By monitoring the students progress the teacher can observe the students strengths and weaknesses to work with the student on subjects they are struggling in. Having a good flow throughout the classroom will benefit students and their learning with less distractions.

    3) Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

A beginner reader can become an advanced with practice. From personal experience when Aliyah was in K-1st grade and she didn't know how to read. She would get frustrated and try to give up! But we would work with her every night. She slowly got better through her reading process and now reads well and is also a confident reader. Last year when I was in Mrs. Bitz 3rd grade classroom for my field experience. A student was behind because he missed school. So the whole class was ahead of him on their reading test. So Mrs. Bitz asked me if I wanted to work with him one on one in the hallway so that he could get caught up with the rest of the class. But she said I can't tell him the right answers. I said ok. Not thinking how hard that was going to be for me. When he did get the answer wrong I anted to tell him no not that one! And I wanted to tell him the right answer so bad but I didn't because i knew he wouldn't learn that way and it wouldn't benefit him in the long run. But when he got the answer right I was screaming on the inside. I was so happy for him but i shouldn't show it because he was taking a test.

    1. It is so hard to keep quiet when students are taking a test...or working on an answer on there own. But way to keep it to yourself! They need to be independent learners...if we "help" them with the answer, they don't really learn it!

  2. 1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

The six language arts that was mentioned, honestly I am not comfortable teaching any or discussing any of them as i am still in the early stages of learning to become a teacher. The techniques that I picked up so far are visually representing or viewing as I am a visual learner, I see different opportunities to develop new learning skills. I would read through a chapter and take notes on my own then have to see it to actually understand what i have read.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student.

One of the roles of the teacher I chose is being a facilitator: this role includes stimulates, develops, provides opportunities to the students and also the family. The teacher would encourage the family to be involved in and out of the classroom. Gives the students choices to read and pick out the books they are most interested in. Explaining how a simple choice to a student to pick out what they enjoy reading and they can comprehend is one of many ways to show the success in the students. Making reading fun and enjoyable is always a positive to students who will eventually pick up a book for no reason just because they enjoy reading.

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

When my child was struggling in school with reading and she has a quiet voice but loves to write stories. She can go on and on with pages of stories she wrote, then she gets bullied about how she cant read loud or her voice is just quiet. I keep telling my daughter every thing will be ok do not let a few students let her feel bad about her challenges she is overcoming. When we took our classes during the summer with the story teller, how she changes her voice and really gets into character. I told my daughter if she loves to read and write stories this is how this lady read us hers. I showed her and also got into character for her and she laughed at me but she says it was nice and she loves the story. She enjoys reading to us her books from school and one day I was amazed as she read the whole book to us. Now its our story time for her to read to her brother and then i will read to them. I encourage my niece and my children to read as much as they can to also make it fun.

    1. I am also a visual learner so I think it is great that you see that an area of comfort! Don't worry, we will learn lots this year! Teaching reading and language arts is so exciting as you are able to see students get involved in text! I also like the way you talked about getting parent support as a facilitator!

  3. Chapters 1-3

Read Chapters 1 -3 along with the Patterns of Practice pages. Answer the three questions/discussion points below by replying with a comment below this post:

    1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

I don’t necessarily think that I know anymore about one language arts area than I do another. If I had to choose one I would have to say it would be reading. I feel the most comfortable discussing and teaching reading because it is a highly stressed subject. I believe that reading comprehension is very important and is taught at such an early age. I have learned many ways to teach and assess reading comprehension.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student.

One important role of the teacher is being a great coordinator. In order to create success in the classroom a teacher must create a schedule that works well with the colleagues that will also be teaching his/her students (librarian, music teacher, physical education teacher, aids, parent volunteers, etc.). The teacher must also be able to coordinate activities with the other programs and institutions to create positive learning experiences to enhance student learning.

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

During my practicum this past spring I was placed in a wonderful third grade classroom. I had the opportunity to give students fluency checks. The instructor had shown me the student prior check scores and I could see how the students where improving throughout the semester. It was great to see how excited the students where when they accomplished their goals. I really enjoyed my experience with them.

    1. It is so true that reading is a "a highly stressed subject." And the topic that comes to mind if you even say Language Arts. Being a coordinator and setting up structure in the class is SO important! "Shooting from hip" is not a good option! Although sometimes you have to roll with a teachable moment. It's all about being flexible!

  4. 1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

Reflecting on my past classroom experiences, I am not sure if I'm entirely proficient with these strategies. I feel like I would be comfortable with listening because I'm able to connect past experiences to certain materials. Understanding the nature of body language is very crucial to me because it can determine if that learner is comfortable with the subject matter or not. I'm also able to evaluate based off listening to someone's response and understanding of the material. I also feel that talking isn't my greatest strength because I tend to be timid at times when there is a large audience present. I feel that I'm confident enough though to discuss these strategies with my peers and go from there.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student.

I feel that all of these aspects are important within the role of a teacher. The two that stood out to me are communicator and facilitator. All teachers have different teaching styles and I feel like being a facilitator allows the learners to expand their creativity and stimulate their interest in a certain subject. A facilitator involves all aspects of the learner (family, administration, classmates) to make the best possible learning environment for that student. I also feel that being a communicator sets the tone for what the student will be learning. A teacher must have expectations of their students and setting goals for them to do their best.

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

I got the opportunity to work at Jeanette Myhre this past spring and help in the Reading 180 room. There were several different groups that had designated times to come in and work phonemic awareness or breaking down the story and being a critical thinker. I got to see progress because the students got to work at their own rate and you could really see the different approaches that students took to answer some of the questions. It was definitely an experience that all should take part of.

    1. Reading body language is such an important part of listening. I am glad you keyed in on this aspect. I am glad that you got to be a part of a differentiated instruction classroom where students work at their own speed. Expectations are important...set them high!

  5. 1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

I am most comfortable with reading. I have been in a classroom where i had to teach parts of reading and I am most familiar with reading, and know how important it is to stress it in the classroom.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student

I feel that all the roles a teacher has in the success of their students learning are important, but being the facilitator stuck out to me. Facilitating the children's learning through school and outside of school with family participation. Working for boy's and girls club throughout my high school years with children gave me some experience in being a facilitator in encouraging them to be creative and learn to expand their options not only in the classroom but in the community and at school as well.

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

This past spring I had the opportunity of being placed at Centennial Elementary in the 3rd grade classroom. I was able to be in the classroom for reading/language arts and got to experience the different ways of teaching fluency and breaking down of stories through different strategies. It was a great experience.

    1. Being a teacher is not a "sage on the stage" but a facilitator for all the reasons you discussed and more! Your boys and girls club experiences give you great experiences to pull from as a beginning educator! Fluency has been so stressed in schools...along with strategy use! It's exciting to see students succeed.

  6. 1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

I feel I know most about listening and talking out of the six language arts discussed. I have worked as a preschool teacher before and most instruction was verbal to them since they weren't able to read yet. They were in the beginning stages of reading which is basically learning letter sounds and letter recognition. I did a lot of talking and they did a lot of listening and vice versa.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student.

One of the teacher's roles is being an organizer. This is very important as students need stability and routine. Consistency is one thing that will either make or break not only your classroom management ability, but you as a classroom teacher. As an organizer, they set the time schedules. They also balance out the language arts across their curriculum. That is very important to incorporate them all.

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

I will share a story about my son when he was emerging as a writer and reader. He and I have a very close bond and the new school years are always tough for us both. Last year when he was in 1st grade, I always made it a point to write him notes daily. I'd pack them away in his back pack so he can find them during the day when he is missing me. Soon after, he would come home everyday with a note for me. I loved reading the way he spelled words, even if he didn't know how to spell them. I could tell he did his best at sounding and spelling the word out. His face would light up as I would read the whole note even if the letters were jumbled. It brought great joy to him that I could comprehend his writings. Also all through last year, he wasn't a fan of reading. Although he loved being read to since he was a baby, he hated to read aloud and to self. He had a reading coach at school that helped him find that love for reading last year. I got a letter in the mail tthe other day that he no longer needed that service as he was reading up to par! Super proud Mom moment! :)

  7. 1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

I feel comfortable with listening and talking, I enjoy reading to students and love to ask question during the reading time, In this way i can tell if they are listening or paying attention. I learn how children think and communicate. When I can keep their attention and interest we had a good listening and talking experience.. The other four language arts areas i would need to practice.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student.

One of the teachers roles I think is important is Manager because they set expectations all children need to know what is expected of them. They also monitor students profess, by this the teacher will know what the student is learning and what needs to be worked on. Keeps record so that if the is a child that need RTI them that can be addressed. Arranges the classroom to facilitate learning, the manager knows what type environment is needed for learning to occur. Provides all the technology to support the language arts activities, makes learning fun!

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

An experience I had with students in emerging reading and writing was when I did my field experience at Pioneer Elementary, the student working in groups on stories, all student were chosen by drawing names out of a cup. So that the advance readers were helping the less advanced student. I really liked this idea.

    1. You perspective of "I learn how children think and communicate" hits the nail on the head for the importance of listening and talking!! You have many key points of a teacher being a manager and I like that you incorporated technology. Teaching is not an easy job!!

  9. 1. Which area of the six language arts discussed do you feel you know the most about and are most comfortable discussing and teaching? Why?

One of the six language arts that I would feel most comfortable disscussing and teaching would have to be talking. Even though I can be shy at times I tend to snap out of it and make friends. Talking used to be one of the least things I didn't like about school growing up. Now, I'm so glad I have made goals to overcome that obstacle and I'm making my way to that goal.

    2. Discuss one of the teacher's role and why it is important to the success of the student.

One of the teacher roles that stood out to me would have to be the Manager because a manager teacher is the person keeping the room in check. She or he is the one who sets the boundriesand organizes the classroom for students, monitors student's progress and records it.

    3. Share an experience that you have had with a student or a child as an emerging reader or writer.

An experience I've had over the years would be working with two and a half year olds. Teaching them then letters and the sounds they make. when they would see the letter at the beginning of their name they would point to it and say the sound then say their own name. Writing would have to be with my son he has a hard time writing so helping him sound out the words to write was something we would sit and do because he was always wanting to write people letters and mail them.

    1. I love that you chose talking as a strong area in lang. arts. Sometimes that is a hard one to remember to incorporate into classroom instructions but so important. Manager as a teacher role is key to classroom success! You are so lucky to already have so much experience and engagement with teaching the little ones.
