1. What is your biggest take-away from this video?
ReplyDeleteMy biggest take away from this video is that mini lessons are important to give students time to have small group work and time to come back together and talk about it. The mini lessons allow the class to cover only small part of a writing a day. They will then cover the writing piece by piece over a series of days.

I think that “mine a text” means that you will really go in deep and cover the text piece by piece. Like Lucy Calkins said, “the first day you might only cover the first 3 sentences”, slowly covering the full text over a series of days.
Or only take the part of the text that is important to your lesson...Focus their attention on a mini-lesson and then give them time to work!!
Delete1. My biggest take-away from the video would be how they break down lessons to around 10 minutes and that is called a mini lesson. To keep the pace of the lesson at around the time and brief. When working in the small groups the students should know what to do, and keep it simple for them to understand. When its time to follow up the students will get homework.
ReplyDelete2. When I watched the video about Lucy Calkins speak about mini lessons she brought up how they would take couple of sentences and break them down during the lesson. This is what is called mine a text, the class would have time to break apart the sentences and look at what it means so each student would get the lesson.
"To keep the pace of the lesson at around the time and brief." Very important and hard to do!
Delete1) After watching Lucy Calkins video about mini lessons my biggest take away is that the teacher needs to keep a steady pace going while teaching a mini lesson. The key point is to focus on their small group work. What do you expect the kids are doing on their own? And how do you respond to the problems the kids are going to be getting into on their own? Then have a follow up with your students. Focus on their strengths and weaknesses individually so that the student can get help where needed. The mini lesson is a review for the students to get more ideas on a larger lesson that will follow.
ReplyDelete2) "Mine a text" to me means the teacher and students will read a text one day and a couple of days later read the same text and find a different topic to cover and discuss in class.
After the mini-lesson, "The key point is to focus on their small group work." You focused in on some great questions and key points of using mini-lessons!!
Delete1. Mini-lessons allow the material to be broken down and then to be revisited during 10 minute sessions. It really allows the learners to comprehend the material fully and ensure that students are understanding what is taking place. The students get to work at their own pace and allows them to progress together.
ReplyDelete2. The text is broken down into sentences and they could cover may be 3 sentences a day until and then they go back to it. It's a great way to ensure everyone is on the same page and understanding the material.
So true- "The students get to work at their own pace and allows them to progress together." Giving them time to work and use their skills and not just listen to the teacher is so important!

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of the mini lessons. I know doing a lesson that lasts half hour or more can seem overwhelming to some students. The mini lessons which consists of 10 minutes will give more time to go over parts of the material to make sure everyone comprehends. Then you are able to go back and review and reflect with your students.
2. What do you think Lucy Calkins means when she says to mine a text?
I think Lucy Calkins means to examine the text and dig deeper into it. She says read the text one day and go back later and mine it.
"I know doing a lesson that lasts half hour or more can seem overwhelming to some students." Students absolutely will not be able to listen to what you are teaching when you keep them "listening" for that long!

ReplyDeleteIn the mini lessons you can read parts and keep going back to the text, breaking it down and making time to practice Reading and Writing. I like that it has advice at the end of the lessons for the teacher.
2. What do you think Lucy Calkins means when she says to mine a text?
What i think Lucy means to mine the text, is to pick at it little at a time and study it.
The mini-lessons are set in place and then teacher support student learning by "making time to practice Reading and Writing."

ReplyDeleteThe idea of mini lessons are great, because you as a teacher can make sure that all your students are on track and keeping up with the pace at which you are teaching it so that they don't fall behind.
2. What do you think Lucy Calkins means when she says to mine a text?
She means by going over the text and then at another time go deeper into to get a better understand of the text.
I love the way you commented that " a teacher can make sure that all your students are on track and keeping up with the pace." This is so much easier to do when you are able to work with a small group.
Delete1. My biggest take away from this video is allowing students time to practice through structured mini lessons.
ReplyDelete2. When Lucy Calkins says, "Mine the text," I think she is referring to breaking down what is being said in the text and checking for those understandings.
