  1. Identify and describe one strategy Mr. Hernandez taught with the book Cock-a Doodle-Doo.
Mr Hernandez used the Aesthetic listening strategy. The students focused on lived-though experiences of the literature, and the connections students make to their own lives, the world around them, and other literature.(p.119) The students predicted what will happen by clues they recognized. They visualized what would happen by the descriptive words and phrases or (objects). By Mr Hernandez placing all the clues in front of them they could make predictions. They can also imagine a picture of the scene while they listen to the story.

Discuss "talk" in the classroom and how it can be beneficial. Use quotes from the text to support your discussion.

Talk can be beneficial when students read in small groups about books they are reading. They talk about each others writings, this help organize information they're learning, and work on projects.(127)
As students talk with classmates they us talk for different purposes, to control classmates behavior, maintain social relationships, convey information, and share personal experiences and opinions.(127) Students learn and refine these strategies when talking wih classmates. They learn how to begin conversations, take turns keeping the conversation moving forward, support comments, respond, and deal with conflict, and end conversations. They learn how important talk is to knowledge and deepening their understanding.(.127)

    1. Identify and describe one strategy Mr. Hernandez taught with the book Cock-a Doodle-Doo. One strategy used by Mr. Hernandez is aesthetic listening, which includes predicting. He has the students predict what they think is going to happen on several occasions. For example he introduced his lesson by using a discover bag. He pulled out items that related to the story, and then asked the students what they thought the book was going to be about.
    2. Discuss "talk" in the classroom and how it can be beneficial. Use quotes from the text to support your discussion. Talk is very important in the classroom. It allows students to share their ideas and knowledge with each other. There are many ways that students can use talk in the classroom such as in small groups, in whole groups, giving oral reports, interviews, and also by having debates. I think that oral reports are very important activities to do in school. “Giving a report orally helps students to deepen their knowledge as well as to develop their ability to speak in front of a group.” (Language Arts Patterns of practice page 133) I believe that speaking in front of a group is an important skill for students to learn that will help them become more successful as they get older. I have noticed that many students still do not feel comfortable speaking in front of a group. The more practice we have speaking orally to a group the better off we will be.

  3. 1. Identify and describe one strategy Mr. Hernandez taught with the book Cock-a Doodle-Doo.

Mr. Hernadez taught three of the most important aesthetic listening strategies which are PREDICTING; the children predict what the story is about by seeing the objects, VISUALIZING; he uses props such as a chef's hat, a flour sifter, an egg beater, an oven mitt, a plastic strawberry, a shortcake pan, a pastry blender, and measuring cups and spoons, and the rooster puppet, then shows the cover of the book, and CONNECTING; he asks them what the title makes them think of, what they think the rooster will cook. When the students reply "strawberry pancakes", he asks if any of them has tasted strawberry shortcake. The students then make connections with a similar book they have read before. "The Little Red Hen", after he read a few pages. They also makes connections of real life foods to compare to shortcake.

    2. Discuss "talk" in the classroom and how it can be beneficial. Use quotes from the text to support your discussion.

"Talk is an essential part of language arts and is necessary for academic success." I like how it said a quiet learning environment was the most effective, but now teachers must make extra effort to provide opportunities for them to talk not only for learning, but for socializing too. The most important benefit of talk is that it promotes higher level thinking. Students learn and refine their strategies for talking with classmates as they participate in small-group conversations. With small groups, they learn how to begin conversations, take turns, keep the conversation moving forward, support comments, respond to questions that classmates ask, deal with conflicts, and bring the conversation to a close. As students learn how to participate in discussion, whether it be teacher-led or student-led, they move beyond one-word and single-sentence responses, engage in speculative thinking, piggyback on classmates' ideas, and ask their own questions.

  4. 1. Mr. Hernández allowed the students to predict, visualize, and connect the story. This is known as aesthetic listening and it was introduced at the beginning of the story. He used props at the beginning of the story for students to get a gauge on what might happen. Also, it was used for students to visualize the objects in the story. Lastly, the book was connected to prior stories that students had a background knowledge of.

    2. Talk is used for several different purposes. In the book, talk is used to control classmates' behavior, maintain social relationships, convey information, and share personal experiences'. Students also learn how to socialize and begin conversations with small group talk. Talk is powerful because one can deepen their understanding of another person by how they're talking and through body language.

  5. 1. Identify and describe one strategy Mr. Hernandez taught with the book Cock-a Doodle-Doo.
Mr, Hernandez allowed his students to have a discussion while he engages them in the book. His students are comparing, contrasting and also thinking what is next during his reading of the story.
    2. Discuss "talk" in the classroom and how it can be beneficial. Use quotes from the text to support your discussion.
When talking or having a discussion in the classroom can be beneficial to the student and also the teacher would see who is learning or even picking up certain plots from a story. "Teachers also monitor students as they participate in discussions, checking that they're respectful, keeping conversations focused." ( page 118) When students are put in groups, in my opinion the smaller the better, some students who tend to talk louder than quiet ones will always get to say what is on their minds, as when a quieter person is a small group they would also get a chance to be heard as well.

  6. 1. One of the strategies Mr. Hernandez used was aesthetic listening. He had the students predict what was going to happen throughout the story, this allowed them to engage in conversation and discussion about the story Cock_a-Doodle-Doo and visualize how the story was going to take place.

    2. Discussion in the classroom supports the students learning and promotes their ability to think and solve problems. By having discussion it helps the students dig into the story and deepen their comprehension. This is a very important to do when reading a story, because by engaging the students in discussion will help them remember and understand the story better.

  7. 1.Identify and describe one strategy Mr. Hernandez taught with the book Cock-a Doodle-Doo.

The main strategy that Mr. Hernandez used was the Aesthetic Listening. Three of the most important aesthetic listening strategies are predicting, visualizing, and connecting. Mr. Hernandez first showed the cover and asked his students what the title made them think of. His students also made connections to a prior book that they read called: “The Little Red Hen.” He had visuals for the students to see by bringing in objects that relate to the story: a chef’s hat, a flour sifter, an egg beater, an oven mitt, a plastic strawberry, a shortcake pan, a pastry blender, and measuring cups & spoons. What a great way to use the Aesthetic strategy. Mr. Hernandez and his students seemed to enjoy his story and cooking the strawberry shortcake. They were engaged and shared some laughs together during this activity.
