In the textbook color is a visual element and evokes different meanings. Color plays an essential role in visual language. There are primary colors the building blocks of the color wheel, secondary colors are made by mixing two primary colors, and mixing a primary and secondary color makes tertiary colors. Color also has different meanings. Warm= red meaning danger, warning, courage, vitality, love, embarrassment, heat, and violence. Cool= blue calming, peaceful, truthful, tranquil. Neutral= black death, mourning, sophistication, and power. Students need to learn about these basic concepts to understand how color influences them and know how to use it in their visual representations. Students use colors to grab attention and send messages in their projects they create. So that’s why it is important for reading instruction.

The vocabulary method that stood out to me in chapter 8 is the word learning strategies using a Word Wall. I chose this method because word walls are the best way to focus student attention on words and are a great way for students to build vocabulary. The five key steps for a word wall: Step one teacher prepares the word wall.
Step two introduces the word wall by preparing activities before reading.
Step three the teacher and students will write key words on a word wall and display the word wall in their classroom for the students to use during a lesson or the student can use the word wall and reflect on it.
Step four uses the word wall for exploring activities.
Step five write the words on word cards to make word booklets for students to refer to as needed. I would use this method in my classroom for Language Arts/Reading lessons. Kind of like how I did my writing lesson. When I made a word wall about nouns from the book and the student used the nouns to make their own noun flip books. I would use word walls for many different Language Arts/Reading lessons. The students can always look at the word wall while doing an assignment.

Symbols are used to help you understand what they stand for or what brand something comes from. They are images that society has put on a shared image. They are used to guide you though maps, charts. Symbols are put in the categories of pictograms, ideograms and logograms. Symbols such as McDonalds children read that as chicken nuggets, hamburgers and fries, or a toy. They read this symbol and want to go there all the time to eat. Once students are familiar with symbols they tend to look for them when reading. Symbols are used in a lot of reading and if children learn what they are they could recognize them and use them to comprehend a text or image.

I would choose Analyzing word parts- I would teach Vocabulary words such as prefix words, under(beneath)(ex) underbake, anti(against) (ex) anitacademic, hyper(over), (ex) hyperdrive, hemi(half) (ex)hemimembrane. By teaching and learning these words students will understand and break down some words to learn the meanings. I will introduce these prefixes by 2 or 3 an week. I would use these words and teach how to say the words correctly, understand the words multiple meanings, use the word appropriately in a sentence, identify relate nouns, verbs, and adjective forms, Recognize related words that come from the same root words, and name synonyms and antonyms etc. One thing I will do in my classroom room is make it an word rich environment,

The visual language that caught my attention was symbols. The book describes symbols as signs that students are surrounded by. They're objects that are used to stand for something. Students are very familiar with symbols because they tend to see them all day. Whether it is the logo of the school they go to or the Apple symbol that is on electronics, students have built a relationship with them. Symbols can also be emoticons, sports teams, or other corporate logos such as the McDonald's arcs. It is crazy to think about how we associate a symbol with something in our life.

Word study activities are definitely something that I'm familiar with because it allows the students to explore the meaning of the word. Word posters allow the student to choose a word from the word wall and write it on a small poster. Then they draw a picture to illustrate the word and write a sentence using the word to describe their drawing. I also enjoy word sorts because it can relate an assortment of words together and they must identify the correlation.

My visual element that stood out to me was humor, as I think all the other visual element is important but this one would keep the reader surprised. There is the use of visual humor in all ages and all books that clarify the exaggerations of the details. Students will also participate in the visual language as they understand the narrative devices such as creating a Venn Diagram or using a comic strip to retell a tall tale.

By building vocabulary you would have to know what the word means and I like homonyms and multiple meanings of words. If you don't know what is behind a word that you are using for your vocabulary then how would the students remember each word. I would use a set of words that the students would use such as the book refers to and example of "toast" it can have different meanings. Or another would be on page 223 as it gives a visual example of "hare" and it could be "hair" as they sound the same but different meaning. I would use a poster and have the students make there own of some examples of both.

The Visual element that stood out to me in the reading was humor. Humor is generally added to catch students of different ages attention. Humor will sometimes exaggerate things, so that the point is made and it is easily remembered by the reader. Sometimes cartoons are used in humor to prove a point with certain symbols that are used, and also to get an important point across and sway you into one direction. Humor is a huge factor in reading at different ages, and is very important to understand it.

I like the word walls. I chose this method, because i have experience with word walls and see how they are very successful in the classroom. A word wall is piece of paper or multiple papers that are in alphabetical order where the teacher and student add important words from text so that they can be explained and understood. In my class I would use a word wall in various ways depending on the grade level. I would have the students, with my help, add words and then generate their own story using words on the word wall. By the stories the students write, it can be easily assessed to show if they are understanding the words meaning. There are several other ways to incorporate a word wall into your class, but that is one idea that i had.

  6. 1. Chapter 7 discusses visual language. Select a visual element from the text and describe why it is important to reading instruction. Symbols are a part of visual text and give a reading an extra visual aid to help make connections. There are many different types of symbols used in the world today that represent things on maps, logos, emergency signals and more.
    2. Chapter 8 is all about vocabulary, its origins, how to teach it in the classroom. Find a method of building vocabulary that you read about in the chapter that is of interest to you. Explain why you chose this method. Define the method and how you would use it in the classroom. The strategy that I found would work the best for me is Word-Learning Strategies. First you use the text to try and figure out the word, analyze the word parts, and finally check a dictionary. I find myself looking up many words in the dictionary to this day. I enjoy doing it and find that I get a concrete explanation of the word. This is a great tool to teach students and they can benefit from learning how to guess and check.

Color is an example of a visual element. It evokes meaning. I like how the book stated that in every culture, colors have powerful significance. Which is very true. Color plays an essential role in visual language by drawing attention, calming us, communicating happiness, relaxes us, and stirs up excitement. Students need to learn about basic concepts such as primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors to understand how color influences them and know how to use them in their visual representations.

I would definitely use word walls. I would use them because I have personally seen them in almost every classroom I have been in and I think that they are effective. You write important words on the word-wall charts and post them in the classroom. I would introduce the word wall and add words to the wall. I would write them big enough for the students to see so they can refer to them for various activities. I would add a small picture or write a synonym for a difficult word, put a box around the root word, and write the plural form or other related words nearby.
